It missed me (knock on wood)

Posted by nathan on Feb 28, 2006 in Father

Last night Steph threw up all the way home from work. She walked in the door and was weak and pale and quite sick. The Bub and I went out after sending Momma to a hot bath. When we came back she was in bed. EJ had a little snack from Momma and then fell asleep. We were all in our places, Steph in bed, EJ in her crib and me at the computer. I was just about to really start beating myself up for being awake still at 2:30 WHEN OUT OF THE CRIB CAME A TERRIBLE SOUND.

EL Squeako was throwing up in her sleep. She woke up rather quickly and then was just as unhappy as her mother had been several hours earlier.

Today the girls spent all day in bed. In the evening I figured out that the virus was spreading to our Lil Bug through the breast milk, so Steph witnessed formula feeding of her child for the first time.

Our Doctor says that there was a terrible bout of stomach flu going around, in fact she had cancelled all of her appointments for today as she was at home suffering too. So for now, it has not caught up to me, and I hope it doesn’t cause it looks just as fun as food poisoning.

Standby

Posted by nathan on Feb 28, 2006 in Father

After a boldly stupid move on my part, I have reverted my Powerbook back to it’s original operating system. Hello OS X. If only I could have been happy with the Stable branch of Linux, I might still be using it. However, I wanted to have the newest version of Amarok because it was skipping when it played so I tried jumping over to the development trunk and then nothing at all worked. I had to get my school work done on something so I popped the OS X disc that came with the newest addition to the house (Mac Mini) and booted up a Tiger. Soon, I’ll be able to get things aligned where I can reinsert myself into the land of Linux.

First Visit

Posted by nathan on Feb 28, 2006 in Father

I had the initial visit at the gym this morning. The Trainer measured the fat on my arms (very little) and on my waist ( still not much) and my heart condition (not bad.) Then because I was there, I got on a treadmill for a little bit. My mind got all crazy and bounced around and I found it hard to let go. Then I rode the exercise bike for like five seconds, and I was about to leave but I thought, I’ll do some arm and chest machines for half an hour and then go to the Yoga class downstairs.

The Yoga class is one of the things that I really wanted to take regularly, that was until I took it. I am a very tight person. My muscles are tight, my mind is tight and my heart is very tight so going into this class was very hard for me to deal with. There were a couple of moments where I whited out and eventually I broke. I was prepared to leave, but the instructor was very gentle and got me to stay, saying that the hard stuff was nearly over. I was in the child’s pose crying while everybody else was all beautiful in their standing poses.

The floor poses were easier and I am glad I stayed. Afterwards the instructor complemented me for staying and thanked me for the work I did. Don’t let anyone fool you , it was work. I had to decide to accept myself for who I was right at that moment and that’s the hardest thing I’ve done all day long.

God is in the Footswing

Posted by nathan on Feb 27, 2006 in Father

This morning, Stephanie told me about a conversation we had when I was asleep, it went like this.

ME:

Do you know who is in the footswing?

STEPH:

Huh? No, who?

ME:

God is in the footswing.

STEPH:

Oh ok, that’s good.

When she told me the last thing I said, it sounded like my Grand Daddy, which is quite an accomplishment as she is Australian and he was from Eastern North Carolina. We talked about it all day and have decided that he was visiting me in our new home. So all day when people said, “It’s nice to see you,” I said, “It’s nice to be seen.”

Step back away from the edge

Posted by nathan on Feb 25, 2006 in Father
Well, I crashed another OIS last night and with my recent purchase of the Mac Mini I got a DVD of OS X Tiger. So, I was up until dawn installing onto my Ti Powerbook the Apple OS. Well, at least for now, I am back on the standard operating mode and no longer running the experimental linux. It was not that Linux is problematic, it is certainly a fine Operating System, in fact I really do miss it already. There are many great things about it, like vast amounts of configurability or the features that were included in the applications were very slick. The problem is the guy who was using the computer. He wanted more on the edge of sanity development versions when what is necessary is stability. There is a very stable branch of linux that is quite attractive and fun. I wanted to get on the development version and play with that too bad I crashed again.

I am just going to have to learn more code and more techniques before the next go around. I am trying to get involved in learning more about the administration of systems as well as package development, and Linux is an extremely beneficial place to do that, so once we get more settled in here, get the DSL hooked up, I am going to get myself back into the Linux realm, until then, I’ve got a couple of nice Apples that are happy to talk to each other.

The Vacuum sucks (revisited)

Posted by nathan on Feb 24, 2006 in Father

Squeaky is absolutely mortified by the vacuum cleaner. She runs, ok, crawls very quickly, and screams like nothing else when it is turned on. She’s also not very fond of the electric drill. She hides under the desk and cries as if she is being chased. So in order to get the house clean without causing chaos, I have taken to strapping her into the Baby Bjorn before I start cleaning. This keeps her happy and content and feeling safe and the rugs get a little bit cleaner.

It’s hard

Posted by nathan on Feb 24, 2006 in Father

Trying to move into a new apartment, babysit your daughter and keep on top of your college homework is not as easy as it looks. Frighteningly, I believe we are due for a minor dip in the ol’ GPA for a couple of weeks. Grrr!

It’s Happening — South Dakota is making abortion illegal

Posted by nathan on Feb 24, 2006 in Uncategorized

If passed by the governor, who said “[a]bortion…should always be illegal”, the ban would outlaw abortion altogether without an adequate exception to protect women’s lives and with no exception for women whose health is in danger or are pregnant due to rape or incest.

The Washington Post : “When you see them have a ban that does not include exceptions for rape or incest or the health of the mother, you understand that elections do matter…”

It begins at the beginning

Squeaky and I walked across Prospect Park today, so that I could join a gym. There is a nice play area with a good babysitter, and some good classes. I will even get to have a consultation with a nutritionist which amazingly seems to be an important thing for me, especially as I am finding out that I am really not very good at feeding myself. There is a a drawback, or a bonus in the location, as Google Maps shows how to get to the gym from our house, they suggest the purpla path, but we cut through the park,
