We signed Daughter up for a half-day at the public Montessori school this morning. We are overjoyed at the prospect. The school opened only last year. We never dreamed we would be excited to put her in public school - or even that we would. Husband was all set to home-school.
It is officially a lottery, but since that is the only public school that accepts 3-year-olds, I am pretty optimistic. Apparently 94% of parents get their first choice - not sure the percentage get their only choice. I guess that counts as a first choice.
Today’s half-day was exhausting.
Daughter was playing Dora all the way, dragging on my coat belt. When we started wanting to eat each other, we stopped for a cookie. Daughter scraped off the chocolate and we ate the rest. Divine raspberry center - it was made from scratch at the place we happened to drop into before we scurried into the bank to have our forms notarized.
Then we got lost, went to a meeting that wasn’t there, and were too tired to stop Daughter from tramping around in the mud and snow. We subsequently flopped into a very civilized basement diner for some curried squash soup with goat cheese and duck confit. Daughter ate pita bread with oil, salt, and pepper (oh the pleasure of pouring and sprinkling!) and snagged a strawberry after eating a pathetic portion of greens under duress.
We came home to a new toaster that the building management left for us. Ah, small pleasures.

Daughter loves, adores, and emulates Dora the super-cool explorer Dora. It sounds even better dressed in my dialect: Supa-cool explora Dora!
Anyway, just now, while she was once again crying out for her heroine, Husband decided to improvise a rock song that I will call Lament for a Small Hispanic Adventuress.
Contrapuntal to Husband’s anguished yawps and in sweet contrast to the driving guitar was our little darling’s high-pitched chirp: “Dowo! Dowo!” Charming.

Yay! It snowed last yesterday, not a whole bunch just a few inches, but the sidewalks were covered when we woke up. It was also nice a chilly when we headed out the door to church. We have started shopping around for a new church to attend up here. So we walked to one nearby, it was in a nice building and had an interesting children’s service and class. We actually stayed with TheBubster through this, then we went upstairs and rejoined the service for communion. Since, we all got really really hungry at the same time, we slipped out the back and headed to a nearby diner.
After we fueled, we took the T, that’s what everyone calls the subway system, to the Boston Commons, or The Commons. EJ rans around in the snow, got into other people’s photos, and finally ended up with us on a frozen pond covered in snow. That was my first time skating on natural ice, and with a layer of snow on it, there was something really neat about it. EJ had fun just lying on the ground for a while and then she helped me shovel the snow, some guy showed up looking to play some hockey and had a shovel. Then she and Steph wandered off chasing a dog that was running around on the ice.
When we headed bac, EJ was wet and tired and fell asleep in my arms on the T. Another perfect outing by the Eckenrode Family.

Ok so we are now installed in the corporate apartment in Cambridge. It’s a nice little place, near enough to public transportation and all that stuff. We have been here since Monday night, but we just got our clothes and office stuff from the movers. The rest of our things are goijng to be in storage until we find a place to call home. We have already been out to look at houses and to see what is available. We have already seen one that we like- we’ll see how that goes.
I have already been out into the community making connections with the geeks around here, it looks like we will be busy busy busy people here in Cambridge! EJ keeps looking out the window at the snow that is lingering and saying “Snow! Snow! akfalkj ashal askhja Snow!”
So that’s it for now.

We like to all crawl into bed together, and everybody reads a book. Steph and I have to take turns reading to EJ. Tonight it was a Sesame Street book. Inside the front cover of the book is a two page graphic of the alphabet and the numbers from one to ten. After finishing reading a few poems to her, and spending some time pointing and naming colors, I turned to the front. We ahve sung the alphabet together many times, never with Mommy as an audience. So I was prepared to show off my little girl’s training. Only she decided to one up me, and she started the whole thing off, pointing at the letter, saying the name of the letter, everything! She only had trouble with ‘F’ and ‘S’ and then for good measure, she did the same thing for 1 to 10!
