Is health care in America a privilege, a right, or a responsibility?

Posted by nathan on Oct 8, 2008 in Eckenrode

From the debate last night, two very different responses.

McCain, “I think its a responsibility.”

Obama, ” I think its a right.”

Think about the difference there, and realize that if you walk into an Emergency Room anywhere in this country, they have to give you care. It sounds like its a right that we already acknowledge, now let’s make it affordable as well!

On my Soapbox

I can understand how people would prefer McCain/Palin over the Obama/Biden ticket. I can also understand how people believe that people who strive to educate themselves and work very hard to be informed about a wide variety of subjects can be hated by those who do not exhibit such intellectual curiosity. I can also understand how people measure a person’s worthiness by their capacity to badger or berate another person for perceived weaknesses. I can also understand how people think that anyone who is not religious is incapable of having morals. I can also understand how people who reject education and learning believe that they are correct in all matters, and if someone dares to question them on this matter, then obviously they are unpatriotic. I can also understand how people who are willfully ignorant about anything that does not happen in their backyard also cry out that anyone who does not see things their way, does not have an open mind.

There is a lot I understand about people, because I have see a lot of people from a lot of different places, in a lot of different places. Not everybody is the same, not everybody has the same beliefs, not everybody wants a government which is democratically elected, not everybody wants a capitalist society, not everyone believes that Jesus is their Lord and Savior, not everybody believes that medical procedures designed to save lives should be illegal, not everybody belittles someone for not being as “tough” or “macho” as them, not everybody thinks that because they have been rebuked that their have been insulted and not everybody is so fiercely dominated by fear that they must attempt to wield that emotion like a sword in order to dominate everyone else.

I would like to have both a President and Vice-President who are capable of speaking in complete sentences. I would like to have both a President and Vice President who understand there is a great big world out there and that not everybody sees things our way. I would like a President and Vice President who exhibit more than a passing curiosity in matters which require application of their minds rather than their fists.

If I am hated for this, then so be it. I will be proud to be hated by people who hate anything which does not fall into their tiny circle of personal knowledge. Just remember this, if all the jocks, gearheads, beauty queens, gossipers and popular people in the high school lunchroom manage to run all the geeks, nerds, art-fags, band-geeks, immigrants and people who do not “fit in” out of the country, then the country will be devoid of scientists, doctors, and professors who collect the knowledge necessary for technology, weapons, engineering, and economy.
