It’s not Fair!!!

Posted by nathan on May 29, 2009 in Daughter

Tonight, for the first time in her life TheBubster has used the phrase, “It’s not FAIR!!” in response to being told what to do. There have been several suggestions by multiple sources about what the appropriate response of the parents is, but for this time, it has merely been to mark it down and note it in order that we can save that for later. So here we all are noting the momentum of the occasion and realizing that it only gets faster from here. hang on and enjoy the ride!

I’ve added a link over on the right. It’s named “Get photos”. The link takes you to the Eckenrode House Shutterfly site. You can leave a message there, ask us to send you photos, or order them yourself. Excellent.

so now i am professional

Posted by nathan on May 24, 2009 in Eckenrode

i just recently had a birthday, which means that my facebook page exploded with greetings from my friends. i am very thankful about the connection that this offers to me. plus is sort of feeds my ego.

at the same time, i received a notification through one of my friends who happens to be Australian and a pretty good musician that there was a call for a Didgeridoo player by a concerned parent to be present at her child’s Multiculture Awareness Day. negotiations ensued and it turns out i was to receive scale pay for a session and ta da I am professional.

the gig was in New York City, and i took a bus to get there. i stayed with another friend and was able to see some old friends and walk around the old neighborhoods. the gig was fun and nice, the kids were attentive and very appreciative of the instrument and quite curious about it. one parent was a bad apple but that is to be expected in a population base as large as NYC.

perhaps my favorite thing happened on Friday night as i was entering Union Square around dusk, a gathering of drummers was getting underway. people were swelling into a crowd and they began dancing. this was a drumming inspired by the dancing so that the lead dancer was dictating the rhythm of the drumming. i saw another fellow with a didge, sort of sneaking some sounds but not quite certain of joining in by himself. so i signaled to him that i was also a didgeridoo player and he rushed over to join with me. suddenly we became a very active part of the drum music. our efforts were hard to contribute in the bass ranges due to the particular combination of African and Caribbean drums being employed so we pretty much limited ourselves to the higher vocalization and animal calls. people took our picture and danced in front of us and it was a great blast. four hours later, our jaws were about to fall off and my voice was completely horse but we were saved as the police rolled in a calmly informed us all that there were noise complaints.

everything broke up peacefully and i head off to bed. the rest of the trip was nice and calm but now i am quite happy to be home with my family.

Almost there

TheBubster hasn’t quite gotten the hang of three-syllable words. She just honored me with a ‘livery’ of a plastic microphone, then another ‘livery’ of a babydoll, and finally a ‘livery’ of a butterfly-shaped pillow. She loves ‘tending’ to go fishing. Her favorite dinosaur is the ‘ceratops’. She plays on her ‘puter’ a lot. Oh, and incase you didn’t realize it, we all live in the milky wave. Yum.

And so on and so on

Posted by nathan on May 14, 2009 in Eckenrode

Went to the doctor this week to take Bud to his 6 month wellness visit. He was exhibiting identical symptoms that his sister and I were having, super snotty nose, cough and runny eyes. I told the doctor that his sister and I were suffering from allergies and maybe he was too. She told me that babies can not have allergies until they have been exposed to pollen for a year. So there is no causation only correlation that the entire duration of our sicknesses was during the time that a pair of trees were in flowering bloom right outside our living room window and now that there are leaves on the trees and the flowers are all gone it is mere coincidence that we are no longer ill. Interesting.
I have been feeling very fiesty since the sickness wore off and am ready for a full-blown intellectual battle with every on coming person, fortunately there is an avenue for this to be address. A series of blogs at school, well, its really a very pretty Bulletin Board System but still, the arguments have been enthralling and heady. I am also feeling my seniorness at the same time, ready to finish yet looking forward to learning even deeper information in my remaining classes.

I guess that is where TheBubster gets it. From me. Because she is very argumentative at this very moment she is arguing against getting in the bath because the water is “too wet”.

Today, she put a blanket around her head like a shaw and made me cal her granny as she pretended to be an old lady all the way to the library and back.

Bud is getting big. Learning how to use his hands on everything and he loves the sound and feel of the didgeridoo.
