whew! that was close
on friday, I was reading the news when i saw an interesting article on slashdot about an organization trying to elect a congressman to the house of representatives. the differential between this organization and your standard fare political party is that the district electorate will be able to vote on every issue in order to technologically guide or advise the representative how to vote and will assist in preparing bills which they want filed as well. i thought “wow! that’s exactly like an idea i used to dream about.”
the really newsworthy thing about this group is that they were looking for a candidate to actually run for office. they were looking for a candidate to run for office, in my district. so of course, i sent them the information that they needed to look at me. essentially, threw my hat into the ring.
six hours later, i read a webpage that described “how to get elected;” you know i am huge on planning ahead[sic]; and then looked at a webpage for the current representative. i got scared and intimidated and retracted my hat.
later in the evening, i received an email acknowledging my retraction and a request that i come interview anyway as i “piqued our[sic] interest.”
so i did.
i showed up with TheBubster had an interview, a report from one of the area news magazines showed up and recorded the interview. i left and dismissed it. you know i could have beat myself up, and said that i answered wrong and should have said this or that, but i just let it lie there as it is and accepted it for whatever it is worth.
i got an email late at night- thanking me and letting me know that i am not running for congress because the organization chose a candidate with more legal experience. i felt relief and disappointment at the same time but mostly i was satisfied that i will not regret this as a missed opportunity- it is so much better to take a chance rather than not and feel defeated for the rest of your life. anyways that was a narrow brush with reality- and now i have a different level of respect for those people who actually do run for office- not that i respect them all the better when they are in office but that’s another story!
