Skype (even for Linux)

The internet has brought about great changes in the way we communicate on this planet. If you haven’t heard by now, there is a service provided by Skype that allows for free phone calls worldwide via the internet. They even have a Linux client, supposedly my hone allows me to receive Skype on it as well, (my Skype account name is n8k99_ , don’t forget the underscore at the end there.)

To get Skype up and working, make sure you have a microphone and speakers or headphones (and a webcam if you like), then visit this page to download a client. On Ubuntu you save the file, then navigate to the directory you saved it in and right click on the file and install.

Once it is installed, setup an account and call away!

  • Yes, I major break through for Skype implementing it for linux.
I like my distro more now with skype, lol
  • In the economic crisis, companies have to shed cost. Maybe this will be a turning year for Ubuntu.
  • agree with this, ubuntu will have some breakthrough this year
  • The only setback is that Skype is still not free for overseas call.
  • Wait till Skype runs on the iPhone!
  • 50psi, There are some applications that will do just that for you but you will need to get your iphone jailbroken first. However if you have free data it means that you also have free calling minutes. I prefer to just ring everyone. I have hundreds of free minutes left every month anyway.
  • Ah, I've thought about jailbreaking it, but was worried about getting connected to iTunes in future. Do you face any problems with updates etc?
  • Skype to skype is free, but Skype to a regular phone or cell phone has a fee.

So, it's not really worth it if you plan to use it to call regular phones, but is great for calling someone on their computer, just make sure they are using their computer and not their phone.
